Exhaust Flange

Exhaust Flange - CAD to STL

Project Description

Exhaust Flange – CAD to STL

For this project our customer was simply wanting to know the location of the flange on one end of a bending pipe in relation to its other. This may seem a simple problem, but when the pipe has many bends and is almost a freeform organic shape, it can seem impossible to locate the face and holes on the flange accurately in relation to the beginning of the pipe.
Our customer had the capabilities of working with an .STL file on their CAD package which meant that there was no reverse engineering required in this project. With it being a local company they were able to drop off the part in question that day, and we began work scanning this the next morning.
The customer explained that the entire part was not required in the scan data which helped to slightly reduce the workload on the project and made for a quicker turnaround time. We were also told that +/- 54 microns was more than sufficient for the accuracy that they needed and so we used our portable arm scanner for this project instead of our more accurate but time consuming laser scanner mounted on a Coordinated Measuring Machine.
After the portable arm scanner gathered a point cloud of data we fused the information to create a mesh .stl file, which simply triangulates the points to create tiny triangle surfaces. We then took this .stl file into Geomagic Design X where we simply tidied up the mesh, throwing away any noise and unwanted points. When we were happy with the .stl file we sent it to the customer who was very pleased with the result and immediately began to work from the data.
